Adam, Merry Christmas. I thought the same thing as I heard the news of the tsunamai. I remember you mentioning that you were in Phuket for a little while and I believe there is little left of that town. Stay safe - I hope you had a nice holiday in the bastion of safety that is the Middle East!

Seriously, the first thing I said to my family was, "HOLY CRAP, a friend of mine JUST left there for Africa".

I don't know if this link will work but it's an Oregon girl caught in the tsunami who was evacuated to Phuket:

Glad you're alive and kicking.

What an incredible catastrophe and an incredible time to have travelled in the region. Having kept abreast of your whereabouts throughout the journey via this site and your hand dandy mapomatic, I knew I had no cause for alarm... for your sake at least.

But I wouldn't be suprised if over 100,000 people have died as a direct result of the quake... and its clear that given the political situation in some of the regions hardest hit by this disaster, its destined to be under-reported in the end. That hardly matters. Its impossible to get your head around a number like that. I've just been walking around in a daze for the last few days thinking about the whole situation. Quite a nightmare.

Luckily you're safe and sound in the Middle East. Take care and be well. Happy X-mas and Happy New Year. Say "HI" to Ez.

well, i thought there was no way karrer would be right with his 100K+ plus estimate, but unfortunately it looks like he is...and after reading more about how chaotic the recover efforts have been i wouldn't be surprised if the final #'s are over 200K. Unbelievable.

your Godmother

Well, the RTW trip is finished, but I think I'm gonna keep the site up for a while and use it as a place to report on some travels stateside. Hopefully I'll have a few good adventures sooner than later. Until then, the site's going to be displayed in chronological order (as opposed to the blog standard reverse-chrono). Enjoy!
